Budding HIV particles, TEM C018 / 0124

Budding HIV particles. Coloured transmision electron micrograph (TEM) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) particles (gren) budding from the surface of a T lymphocyte (orange) from the H9 cell line. HIV attacks CD4+ T-lymphocytes, white blood cells, a crucial part of the bodys immune system. It enters the cell, hijacks the cells machinery to make more copies of the virus, and the new virus particles then burst from the membrane of the cell, killing it. This severely weakens the immune system, causing AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The disease makes the patient susceptible to diseases that would otherwise be harmless. Magnification: x20, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate world of HIV particles in action. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), we witness the deadly process of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) particles budding from the surface of a T lymphocyte. The orange hue represents these crucial white blood cells, which are targeted and attacked by HIV. The image showcases how HIV infiltrates CD4+ T-lymphocytes, taking control of their machinery to replicate itself. As new virus particles multiply within the cell, they eventually burst through its membrane, leading to its demise. This devastating cycle weakens the immune system significantly, ultimately resulting in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). With a magnification level of x20,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide, this photograph offers an up-close look at the biology and pathology behind HIV infection. It serves as a reminder of how viruses can exploit our own cells for their survival and reproduction. In addition to its scientific significance, this image also highlights the urgent need for research and medical advancements in combating HIV/AIDS. By shedding light on the complex nature of this retrovirus and its impact on our immune system, it emphasizes both the importance of prevention strategies and ongoing efforts towards finding effective treatments.
