EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Lascaux II cave painting replica, specifically highlighting an exquisite auroch figure in the Great Hall of the Bulls. The original Lascaux cave, dating back around 17,000 years, was unfortunately closed to the public in 1963 due to preservation concerns. However, this full-scale replica opened its doors nearby in 1983, allowing visitors to marvel at these ancient masterpieces. Painted by Cro-Magnon man during the Stone Age using vibrant red, brown and yellow ochre hues as well as black manganese dioxide pigments, these awe-inspiring paintings hold immense historical and artistic significance. They offer a glimpse into the religious beliefs and cultural practices of our early European ancestors. The photograph itself was taken in 2010 by Philippe Psaila from Science Photo Library. It beautifully captures not only the detailed depiction of an auroch but also provides insight into the overall ambiance and grandeur of this prehistoric artwork. As we observe this image today, we are transported back in time to witness a moment frozen for millennia – a testament to human creativity and ingenuity that has withstood countless generations. This photograph serves as a reminder of our shared heritage and invites us to appreciate the rich tapestry of history that shapes our present-day understanding of art, culture, and humanity itself.
