Pierre Dulong, French chemist

Pierre Louis Dulong (1785-1838) French chemist. Originally a physician, Dulong moved into chemistry as the assistant to Berthollet. In 1811 he discovered the explosive nitrogen trichloride, losing an eye and two fingers in the process. From 1815 he worked with A. T. Petit on thermometry, and in 1819 they published Dulong and Petits Law. This law is only approximately observed, but it had some use in estimating atomic weights for new metals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Pierre Dulong, a remarkable French chemist whose contributions to the field of chemistry are truly extraordinary. Born in 1785, Dulong initially pursued a career in medicine before delving into the world of chemistry as an assistant to Berthollet. In 1811, Dulong made a groundbreaking discovery when he stumbled upon nitrogen trichloride, an explosive compound that would forever change his life. Unfortunately, this momentous finding came at a great cost as he lost an eye and two fingers during the process. Undeterred by adversity, Dulong continued his scientific pursuits with unwavering determination. Collaborating with A. T. Petit from 1815 onwards, Dulong focused on thermometry and together they published their renowned work known as "Dulong and Petits Law" in 1819. Although this law is only approximately observed, it played a significant role in estimating atomic weights for newly discovered metals. Pierre Dulong's legacy extends far beyond his pioneering research on atomic weights and thermodynamics; he epitomizes resilience and dedication in the face of challenges. This mesmerizing illustration captures not only the essence of this brilliant scientist but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge throughout history.
