Metal Print : Proteus mirabilis bacterium
Metal Prints from Science Photo Library
Proteus mirabilis bacterium
False-colour transmission electron micrograph of the bacterium Proteus mirabilis. It is an enterobacterium which is present normally in the human intestine, although it has potential pathogenic qualities. Infections of the urinary tract are the most common diseases caused by P. mirabilis. Often such infections occur in hospitals as a secondary infection in debilitated patients. This gram- negative bacillus has flagella (hair-like structures) on its surface. The movement of the flagella gives the bacterium its mobility, enabling Proteus strains to spread rapidly. Magnification: x6000 at 6x4. 5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Proteus mirabilis bacterium, beautifully captured through a false-colour transmission electron micrograph. As an enterobacterium that naturally resides in the human intestine, this microbe possesses both beneficial and potentially pathogenic qualities. Unfortunately, one of its most common diseases is urinary tract infections, often observed as secondary infections in debilitated patients within hospital settings. Underneath the lens, we can observe this gram-negative bacillus adorned with flagella - hair-like structures protruding from its surface. These flagella play a crucial role in providing mobility to the bacterium, allowing it to spread rapidly throughout its environment. The intricate movement of these appendages grants Proteus strains their remarkable ability to navigate and colonize various areas. With a magnification of x6000 at 6x4.5cm size, this image truly captures the essence of Proteus mirabilis and highlights its significance within microbiology and bacteriology studies. It serves as a reminder of the complex world teeming with diverse microorganisms that coexist alongside us humans. This stunning photograph by Science Photo Library offers an intriguing glimpse into the microscopic realm where microbes like Proteus mirabilis thrive and interact with their surroundings. Its scientific value lies not only in understanding bacterial behavior but also in aiding research efforts towards combating urinary infections caused by this particular species.
