Smallpox virus particle, TEM

Smallpox virus particle. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Variola major virus particle. Each particle consists of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, red) genome surrounded by a protein nucleocapsid (coat, yellow). This is enclosed in a matrix of proteins (orange) and the whole virus is enclosed in an envelope (green). Variola is the most virulent member of the orthopoxvirus group. Infection with V. major causes smallpox, which presents as a fever and skin pustules. It is transmitted by airborne respiratory droplets or by the pus, but was eradicated in the 1970s by a global vaccination programme

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a close-up view of the Smallpox virus particle, captured through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The image reveals the intricate structure of the Variola major virus, which is responsible for causing smallpox - a highly contagious and deadly disease. The vibrant colors in this false-colored micrograph highlight different components of the virus. The red strands represent its DNA genome, while the yellow coat symbolizes the protein nucleocapsid surrounding it. These elements are further enclosed within an orange matrix of proteins, all contained within a green envelope. Smallpox was once a global health threat until it was eradicated in the 1970s through an extensive vaccination program. Infection with Variola major resulted in high fever and distinctive skin pustules that marked its presence. This pathogenic virus could be transmitted via airborne respiratory droplets or contact with infected pus. This visually striking image not only serves as a reminder of our triumph over this devastating disease but also highlights the remarkable complexity and resilience of viral pathogens. It stands as a testament to scientific advancements in virology and microbiology that have enabled us to understand and combat such infectious agents effectively.
