White matter fibres of the human brain C014 / 5668

White matter fibres. Coloured 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. Both methods allow mapping of their orientations and the connections between brain regions. Data/software: NIH Human Connectome Project /humanconnectomeproject.org)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of white matter fibres in the human brain. Coloured using a 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan, it vividly portrays the bundles of nerve fibres that transmit crucial signals between different regions of the brain and even to the spinal cord. By utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), specifically diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI), this technique maps the water contained within these neuron fibers, allowing for an exploration of their criss-crossing patterns. Similar to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), DSI enables researchers to delve into neural data pertaining to white matter fibres in our remarkable brains. Both methods provide valuable insights by mapping orientations and connections among various brain regions. This invaluable information aids in understanding how different pathways contribute to overall brain function. The data and software used for this groundbreaking research stem from NIH Human Connectome Project, which is dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of our complex nervous system. Through fibre tracking techniques, such as DTI and DSI scans, scientists can visualize these intricate networks with unprecedented detail. This awe-inspiring image serves as a testament to mankind's continuous efforts in unlocking the secrets held within our own minds. It represents a significant step forward in comprehending how communication occurs within our brains and opens up new avenues for further research on neurological disorders and cognitive processes alike.
