Brennus putting his sword in the balance, 390 BC, 18th (oil on canvas)

JEB4901567 Brennus putting his sword in the balance, 390 BC, 18th (oil on canvas); 43x65 cm; Palais de Longchamp, Marseille, France; (add.info.: Sacked Rome by the Gauls led by their chief Brennus (Brennos). Faced with the resistance of the Romans, Brennus agreed to deal with the Roman military tribune Quintus Sulpicius: he left Rome against the payment of a strong grudge. A large scale was then prepared on a square in Rome; in order to further increase the grudge, the Gauls placed false weight there. Faced with the protests of the Romans who failed to balance the balance, Brennus added to their despair by throwing his sword on the scale and uttering the words "vae victis" (woe to the defeated). EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil on canvas print captures the intense moment of Brennus putting his sword in the balance during the year 390 BC. Led by their chief Brennus, the Gauls sacked Rome, facing fierce resistance from the Romans. In a dramatic turn of events, Brennus agreed to a deal with Roman military tribune Quintus Sulpicius - he would leave Rome in exchange for a hefty ransom. A large scale was set up in Rome's square to weigh out the payment. To further humiliate and taunt the defeated Romans, false weights were placed on the scale by the Gauls. As protests erupted from the Romans unable to balance it out, Brennus added insult to injury by throwing his sword onto the scale and declaring "vae victis" (woe to the defeated). Painted by Jacques Antoine Beaufort in the 18th century, this artwork beautifully captures this historic moment of negotiation and power play between two ancient civilizations. The intricate details and emotions portrayed in this painting make it a true masterpiece that transports viewers back in time to witness this pivotal event in history at Palais de Longchamp in Marseille, France.
