Arcady,

EDITORS COMMENTS
the George Owen Knapp house, located at Sycamore Canyon Road in Montecito, California, is a stunning example of Italianate mission style architecture captured in this beautiful 1917 photograph by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston. The house was originally designed by Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead and built by Christopher Tornoe in 1911 for George Owen Knapp. Later, it was expanded by E. Russell Ray in the same year. The lower garden in the image was designed by Francis Townsend Underhill in 1914, while the upper garden was the collaborative work of Carlton Monroe Winslow and Charles Gibbs Adams around the same time. The estate was overseen by Charles R. Waugh from 1912 to 1928, with John Scott serving as the head gardener. The photograph showcases the beautiful reflection of the house and its surroundings in the still water of the pond or pool. The Italianate mission style architecture is evident in the arches, red tile roof, and stucco exterior. The neoclassical elements, such as the columns and pediments, add to the grandeur of the estate. The gardens, filled with lush greenery and vibrant flowers, add a pop of color to the otherwise monochromatic image. This hand-colored lantern slide, taken from the Library of Congress, offers a glimpse into the rich history and beauty of Montecito's architectural and horticultural heritage. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the elegance and charm of the early 20th century American estate.
