This exquisite 18th century Ragamala folio features the first wife of Dipak Raga, Dhanashri Ragini, in a serene and elegant setting. The painting, executed in opaque watercolor and gold on paper, showcases Dhanashri in a richly decorated palace courtyard, surrounded by architectural elements and a beautiful lotus pond. She is seated on a raised platform, adorned with a checkered bolster and a water pot, while an attendant stands nearby, holding a checkered fan. The autumnal setting is indicated by the falling leaves and the changing colors of the foliage. The painting is believed to have been created between 1725 and 1750, during the 1730s or 1740s, in the region of Rajasthan, India, or Southeast Asia. The concept of Ragamala paintings originated in the Hindu tradition of India, representing various ragas or melodies, and their associated emotions and seasons.
