Inhabitants of the lower Caroline Islands, 19th century. Creators: Alexander Postels, Godefroy Engelmann

Inhabitants of the lower Caroline Islands, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled 'Inhabitants of the Lower Caroline Islands,' is an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people of the Caroline Islands in the Pacific Ocean during the 19th century. The image was created by Russian artists Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann as part of a series of 65 lithographs that accompanied a volume of maps published after the Russian corvette Seniavin's circumnavigation voyage, led by Captain Fedor Litke. The photograph captures a group of men from the Caroline Islands, standing in a full-length pose, dressed in traditional attire. They are shown wearing only breechcloths or loincloths, revealing their toned bodies and intricate tattoos. One man wears a necklace made of shells, adding to their ethnic adornment. The men are depicted in a casual, relaxed manner, engaging with each other in a friendly and open way. The lithograph was produced during the 1820s, a time when European exploration and scientific discovery were at their height. The image offers a unique window into the lives of these Pacific Islanders, showcasing their distinct cultural heritage and traditions. The photograph is a testament to the rich diversity of the world's peoples and the importance of documenting and preserving their histories. This image is part of the vast collection of the Library of Congress and is a valuable addition to any anthropology or ethnography collection. It is a reminder of the meeting of frontiers between European exploration and indigenous cultures and the importance of understanding and respecting the unique heritage of each community.
