The Revolution in Naples - Garibaldi at the Shrine of the Virgin of Piedigrotta on the 8th... 1860. Creator: W Thomas

The Revolution in Naples - Garibaldi at the Shrine of the Virgin of Piedigrotta on the 8th September - from a sketch by T. Nast, 1860. On the day after Garibaldi's entry into Naples occurred the great fete of the Piedigrotta...This festa was originally established one hundred and twenty-seven years since by Carlo III. to commemorate the expulsion of the Austrians from his dominions. On the present occasion it was held by a most extraordinary combination of circumstances on the day following the entrance of the Dictator and flight of the last of the Austro-Bourbon dynasty. The Neapolitans are a superstitious people, and this combination had an extraordinary effect on their minds. Garibaldi went on a pilgrimage to the shrine of the Virgin of Piedigrotta, after the manner of the Bourbons. The whole of the National Guard were under arms, and lined the streets from the Palazzo d'Angri to the end of the Riviera di Chiaia. The General with his Staff drove down in carnages, and was received with shouts of delight...The Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta is situated near the entrance to the Grotta di Posilipo. According to local tradition it was erected, in 1353, on the site of a much older chapel...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment when Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian patriot and military leader, paid homage to the Virgin of Piedigrotta during the celebrations marking the end of Austrian rule in Naples on September 8, 1860. The scene was sketched by Thomas Nast and later turned into this print by W. Thomas for the Illustrated London News. The day after Garibaldi's triumphant entry into Naples, the city held the annual festa of Piedigrotta, a centuries-old tradition commemorating the expulsion of the Austrians. The Neapolitans, known for their deep-rooted faith and superstitions, saw this event as a powerful omen, further fueling their excitement for the new era. Garibaldi, following the footsteps of the Bourbon kings, embarked on a pilgrimage to the Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta to pay respects to the Virgin. The National Guard, dressed in their uniforms, lined the streets from the Palazzo d'Angri to the Riviera di Chiaia, creating an impressive procession. Garibaldi and his staff rode in carriages, greeted warmly by the cheering crowds. The Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta, located near the entrance to the Grotta di Posilipo, holds a rich history. According to local legend, it was built in 1353 on the site of an older chapel. This sacred site became a symbol of hope and unity for the Neapolitan people, providing a powerful backdrop for this pivotal moment in Italian history.
