EDITORS COMMENTS
York Hall," also known as the Captain George Preston Blow house, is a historic estate located at Route 1005 and Main Street in Yorktown, Virginia. The property was originally built in 1738-1739 as the home of Thomas Nelson Jr. but was later purchased by Captain George Preston Blow in 1914. In 1914, the architectural firm of Griffin & Wynkoop was commissioned to add modern additions to the 18th-century brick house. The resulting design seamlessly blends the old and new, showcasing the best of both eras. The photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston in the 1920s, captures the beauty and elegance of the estate. The landscape, designed by Charles Freeman Gillette, is equally impressive, with a meticulously maintained parterre garden, climbing plants adorning the walls, and a serene flowerbed leading to a pergola. The image also reveals the presence of a lantern, adding a touch of old-world charm to the scene. The photograph is a testament to the rich heritage of American architecture and landscaping during the early 20th century. The intricate details of the house, the lush greenery, and the harmonious blend of old and new are all on full display, making this a truly captivating image. The photograph is part of the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, a valuable resource for those interested in the history of American architecture and design. The Captain George Preston Blow house stands as a reminder of the beauty and elegance of the past, preserved for future generations to appreciate and learn from. The photograph, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of a bygone era, inviting us to imagine the stories that unfolded within its walls.
