Sea-coast north of Viareggio, Italy
NEAR the spot where Shelleys body was cremated, August 18, 1828. " The situation was well calculated for a poets grave. In front was a magnificent extent of the blue and windless Mediterranean - on the other side, an almost boundless extent of sandy wilderness here and there interspersed in tufts of underwood, curved by the sea breeze... This view was bounded by an immense extent of the Italian Alps, which are here particularly picturesque for their volcanic and manifold appearances." - Medwin Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the breathtaking beauty of the sea-coast north of Viareggio, Italy, a place steeped in history and literary significance. The date of this image is 1904, yet it transports us back in time to the tragic events of August 18, 1828. It was on this very shore that the cremation of the renowned English Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, took place. Shelley's body was brought to this spot following his mysterious drowning in the Bay of Spezia. The poet's friend and biographer, Thomas Medwin, described the scene in his memoirs, "The situation was well calculated for a poet's grave. In front was a magnificent extent of the blue and windless Mediterranean - on the other side, an almost boundless extent of sandy wilderness here and there interspersed in tufts of underwood, curved by the sea breeze." The view in this photograph aligns perfectly with Medwin's description. In the foreground, the tranquil Mediterranean Sea stretches out, its calm waters reflecting the clear blue sky. To the right, an expansive sandy beach, dotted with tufts of undergrowth, curves gently towards the sea. The Italian Alps, in the background, add an element of grandeur and drama to the scene. Their volcanic and manifold appearances are particularly striking, adding to the picturesque beauty of the landscape. This photograph is a testament to the enduring allure of the Italian coastline and its connection to the rich literary heritage of the past.
