It was on this very shore that the cremation of the renowned English Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, took place. The poet's friend and biographer, Thomas Medwin, described the scene in his memoirs, "The situation was well calculated for a poet's grave. In front was a magnificent extent of the blue and windless Mediterranean - on the other side, an almost boundless extent of sandy wilderness here and there interspersed in tufts of underwood, curved by the sea breeze."
