EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Rock hyrax, also known as Procavia capensis, perched majestically on a rock. These fascinating creatures can be found across southern Africa, Arabia, and the Middle East. With their diet consisting of grasses, herbs, and shrubs, they thrive in large colonies where females give birth to two or three young after an impressive gestation period of 6 to 7 months. The Rock hyrax holds a special place in the animal kingdom as it is believed to be one of the closest living relatives to the mighty elephant. This ruminant mammal exhibits remarkable adaptability and resilience in its natural habitat. Photographed against a backdrop of clear blue skies at Augrabies National Park in Northern Cape, South Africa, this image captures the essence of African wildlife at its finest. The serene surroundings perfectly complement the beauty and gracefulness of this herbivorous creature. With its unique biological characteristics and striking presence on rocky terrains like these, the Rock hyrax truly stands out among other animals native to Africa. This photograph by Peter Chadwick from Science Photo Library serves as a testament to both nature's wonders and our fascination with them.
