EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of downtown Manhattan in the early 1900s. Dominating the scene is the magnificent New York World Building, proudly standing tall on Park Row. Once hailed as the tallest building in the world, it served as a home for the prestigious New York World newspaper. The side view of this architectural marvel showcases its grandeur and intricate details, capturing our imagination with its soaring height and elegant design. As we gaze at this historic structure, we can't help but feel a sense of awe at its significance in shaping New York City's skyline. Meanwhile, down below on Park Row, life unfolds before our eyes. The street is alive with activity - trolley buses glide along tracks while pedestrians bustle about their daily routines. This snapshot offers a glimpse into urban life during an era when horse-drawn carriages shared space with emerging modes of transportation. Sadly, despite its iconic status and rich history, the New York World Building met an unfortunate fate. In 1955, it was demolished to make way for progress – specifically to accommodate an expanded automobile entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Through Frederic Lewis' lens, we are transported back in time to witness both architectural splendor and fleeting moments of everyday life that once filled these vibrant city streets. This print serves as a poignant reminder of how cities evolve over time while preserving fragments of their past for future generations to appreciate and cherish.
