Battle of Quatre Bras, June 16th 1815. Quatre Bras was a preliminary engagement to the Battle of Waterloo, fought two days before the main battle. The Anglo-Dutch army of the Wellington fought against the left wing of the French Armee du Nord under Marshal Ney at Quatre Bras, a strategically important crossroads. The outcome was a draw, but gave the French a strategic advantage in that Wellington was unable to assist Bluchers Pussian Army, who were being defeated by the main body of the French army at the Battle of Ligny. Both Wellington and Blucher wer forced to withdraw northwards. From The Martial Achievements of Great Britain and her Allies from 1799 to 1815 by James Jenkins, 1815

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intensity and chaos of the Battle of Quatre Bras, a crucial preliminary engagement to the historic Battle of Waterloo. Painted by Thomas Sutherland, this artwork vividly depicts the clash between the Anglo-Dutch army led by Wellington and Marshal Ney's left wing of the French Armee du Nord. Set against a backdrop of smoke-filled skies and dense foliage, this image showcases the strategic importance of Quatre Bras as a crossroads. The battle resulted in a draw but provided an advantage to the French forces, preventing Wellington from assisting Blucher's Prussian Army at Ligny. Intricately detailed with soldiers on horseback charging into combat and infantry formations engaged in fierce fighting, Sutherland masterfully portrays both sides locked in a desperate struggle for control. The horses gallop through fields strewn with fallen comrades while trees stand witness to this brutal confrontation. The presence of renowned figures such as Arthur Wellesley (the Duke of Wellington) and Michel Ney adds historical significance to this artwork. Their leadership and tactical prowess are evident amidst the chaos unfolding around them. This print is not just an artistic representation; it serves as a powerful reminder of one of history's most significant battles that shaped Europe's destiny. With its rich colors and attention to detail, it allows viewers to immerse themselves in this pivotal moment during the Napoleonic Wars.
