Draft of Albrecht Durers dedication to Bilibald Pirckheimer, c1523. Artist: Albrecht Durer

Draft of Albrecht Durers dedication to Bilibald Pirckheimer, c1523. Draft of the dedication to Pirckheimer, probably written in 1523, of his Four Books of Human Proportions, published, after his death, at Nurnberg in 1528. This draft differs from the dedication as ultimately printed, and a deleting line has been drawn through it with a pen from top to bottom. It ends abruptly, and only the first of the two existing pages is here reproduced. The detached signature is from a letter from Durer to Pirkheimer, relative to a painting of the Virgin, written from Venice and dated 23rd September 1506. From the fourth Series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V. (London, 1899)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a draft of Albrecht Durer's dedication to Bilibald Pirckheimer, dating back to around 1523. The dedication was intended for his Four Books of Human Proportions, which were published in Nurnberg in 1528 after the artist's passing. This particular draft differs from the final printed version, as evident by the pen-drawn line crossing through it from top to bottom. Interestingly, this incomplete draft abruptly ends and only one of the two existing pages is reproduced here. Adding further intrigue to this historical artifact is a detached signature found on a letter written by Durer himself to Pirckheimer. The letter pertains to a painting of the Virgin and bears the date of September 23rd, 1506, originating from Venice. As an exquisite example of Renaissance artistry and craftsmanship, this facsimile offers us a glimpse into Durer's creative process and correspondence with his German counterpart. The vibrant colors and intricate handwriting showcased in this manuscript reflect both the artistic prowess and attention to detail that defined Durer's work. Preserved within these lines are centuries worth of history; they speak volumes about not just the artistic genius behind them but also shed light on personal connections forged between artists during that era. This remarkable piece serves as a testament to Durer's enduring legacy as one of Germany's most celebrated artists from the sixteenth century.
