Entry of Victor Emmanuel into Naples - sketched in the Toledo... 1860. Creator: Unknown
Entry of Victor Emmanuel into Naples - sketched in the Toledo by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860....on Wednesday, November 7...both King Victor Emmanuel and Garibaldi entered Naples together...The streets...were festooned with flowers, and evergreens hung from window to window..."Viva Victor Emmanuel!" "Viva Garibaldi!" "Viva Italia Unita!" Such were the cries which rose, not from one, but from a united body of many thousands, who waved their hats and handkerchiefs and flags...I had an admirable view of the King and the Liberator face to face...The difference in the two expressions could not fail to strike the most insensible. I looked at Victor Emmanuel's unvarying face and bold glance, and said - he is the Re Galantuomo; but I looked on Garibaldi, and felt all the moral grandeur of his character'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This sketch, titled 'Entry of Victor Emmanuel into Naples - sketched in the Toledo' by an unknown artist, dates back to 1860. The historic event depicted in the image took place on November 7, when both King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia and Giuseppe Garibaldi, the legendary Italian patriot and military leader, entered Naples together. The streets of Naples were adorned with an outpouring of enthusiasm, as flowers and evergreens hung from windows, and the cacophony of cheers filled the air. The crowd, numbering in the thousands, enthusiastically chanted, "Viva Victor Emmanuel!", "Viva Garibaldi!", and "Viva Italia Unita!" as they waved their hats, handkerchiefs, and flags. The artist, believed to be Frank Vizetelly, captures the momentous occasion with remarkable detail. In the foreground, King Victor Emmanuel II is seen riding on horseback, his unwavering expression and bold gaze reflecting the confidence and determination of a leader. In stark contrast, Garibaldi, on foot, exudes moral grandeur and charisma, his face etched with lines of experience and conviction.
