EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the year 1850, showcases The Grand Saloon at Devonshire House in London. The Duke of Devonshire's esteemed guests included the Duke of Cambridge, His Serene Highness Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar, and approximately 800 members of the aristocracy. The Grand Saloon, a magnificent apartment, is adorned with decorations designed by John Gregory Crace in the style of the renowned artist Charles Le Brun. Originally serving as the entrance vestibule, this grand room now forms one of the most impressive apartments in the building, following the construction of a new grand staircase by the Duke of Devonshire. When transformed into a ballroom, the furniture of this saloon is removed, and seats are raised against the walls, enabling observers to enjoy the dancers with ease. Devonshire House was originally built by William Kent for the 3rd Duke of Devonshire. The image captures the ornate details of the room, including the intricately designed chandeliers, ornate mirrors, and the elegant looking glass. The atmosphere is one of opulence and grandeur, reminiscent of the Victorian era. The Grand Saloon, with its timeless beauty, continues to be a testament to the grandeur of the past.
