Hammersmith Farm, located on Harrison Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, was originally built for John W. Auchincloss in 1887. The house and its surrounding landscape underwent significant changes in the early 20th century, with the architectural firm Olmsted Brothers, led by James Frederick Dawson and Henry Hill Blossom, overseeing the landscaping between 1909 and 1910. In this stunning photograph taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1917, the house is bathed in the soft glow of the sun, with its red-tiled roof and white clapboard siding standing out against the lush green foliage.
