The Rival Candidates, 1784

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating political satire captured by the talented artist Isaac Cruikshank. This print showcases the three prominent contenders vying for the Westminster constituency during the general election of 1784. At the center of this intriguing composition stands Charles James Fox, depicted in an orator's pose reminiscent of Demosthenes. His commanding presence exudes confidence and charisma, symbolizing his prowess as a skilled speaker and politician. To Fox's left stands Lord Hood, portrayed as Themistocles, emanating strength and determination. On the right side of the image is Sir Cecil Wray, whose sly expression earns him the epithet Judas Iscariot. This clever characterization mocks Wray for his betrayal of Fox during their political alliance. The artwork serves as a scathing commentary on Wray's desertion from Fox's camp, highlighting his untrustworthiness through biblical allusion. Despite Wray's treachery, it was ultimately Hood and Fox who emerged victorious in this closely contested race for parliamentary seats. Isaac Cruikshank masterfully captures not only each candidate's physical appearance but also their distinct personalities through intricate details such as clothing choices and facial expressions. Through this etching, he offers viewers a glimpse into an important moment in British political history while providing biting social commentary that transcends time. This historical artifact now resides at Guildhall Library and Art Gallery where it continues to fascinate audiences with its wit and artistic brilliance.
