Saint Justina of Padua Enthroned, with Saints James the Less and John the Baptist,

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a stunning 17th-century pen and ink drawing on ivory laid paper laid down on cream laid card, by the renowned Italian artist Jacopo Palma, also known as Jacopo Palma il Giovane or Palma Giovane. The drawing, created between 1600 and 1605, is currently housed at the Art Institute of Chicago. The composition features the noblewoman Saint Justina of Padua, seated on a throne, surrounded by two other saints. To her right, Saint James the Less, also known as James, son of Alphaeus, is depicted with a pilgrim's staff and a book. On her left, Saint John the Baptist stands with his signature cross and camel's hair mantle. Justina was a 4th-century Christian martyr from Padua, Italy. She is depicted here in regal attire, signifying her status as a patron saint of the city. The high Renaissance drawing exhibits Palma's mastery of the medium, with intricate details and expressive faces. The use of pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash heightened with lead white over black chalk adds depth and texture to the image. The drawing is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Italy and the enduring influence of the Renaissance period. It is a valuable addition to any art collection or gallery, providing a glimpse into the artistic traditions and religious iconography of the time. The inclusion of Saints James the Less and John the Baptist adds to the significance of the work, as they are also revered figures in Christian tradition. Overall, this drawing is a beautiful and intriguing piece that invites further exploration and appreciation of the art and history of Italy.
