EDITORS COMMENTS
The Steam Yacht Wanderer, a Symbol of Luxury and Elegance". This print showcases the majestic steam yacht Wanderer, later known as Vagus, in all its glory. Built by Robert Steele and Co in 1878 for Charles Joseph Lambert as his private yacht, Wanderer was hailed as the epitome of opulence and comfort. With its sleek design and impeccable craftsmanship, it quickly gained recognition as the most luxurious private steam yacht ever constructed. Registered with the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron, RYS Wanderer found its home at Cowes on the picturesque Isle of Wight. This vessel became synonymous with sophistication and leisurely pursuits among high society circles during that era. In 1903, a new chapter began for this remarkable vessel when it was acquired by the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Sealark. However, this photograph captures her earlier days when she proudly hoisted her sails under the ownership of Charles Joseph Lambert. The image beautifully portrays Wanderer's gaff rig sailboat design gliding through calm waters against a scenic backdrop. It is a testament to both engineering prowess and artistic composition. As we admire this snapshot from history captured by Arthur Henry Kirk & Sons of Cowes, we are transported back to an era where sailing represented elegance and adventure. The wanderlust-inducing allure of this magnificent ship continues to captivate us even today.
