EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the William of Wykeham Building in Winchester, England, back in 1912. The building itself stands as a testament to the remarkable legacy of William of Wykeham, who was not only a Bishop of Winchester but also held the prestigious position of Chancellor of England. William's influence extended beyond his religious duties; he founded New College Oxford and New College School in 1379 before establishing Winchester College in 1382. Additionally, he played a significant role as the clerk of works during the construction of Windsor Castle. In this image, we see two men standing outside the majestic structure on a sunny day. They appear deep in conversation, perhaps discussing literature or matters related to their faith. The presence of books hints at their scholarly pursuits and highlights the importance placed on education during that era. The photograph exudes an air of tranquility and reverence for history. It transports us back to early 20th century Britain when Christianity played a central role in society. With its intricate architectural details and imposing presence against the backdrop of Hampshire's natural beauty, it is no wonder that this building has become an iconic symbol within British culture. This lithograph print from "The Mighty Army" by W. M. Letts is brought to life through Stephen Reid's skilled illustrations. It serves as both a historical document and a work of art that pays homage to William Wykeham's enduring contributions to religion, education, and architecture.
