EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the bow framework of the Graf Zeppelin II, LZ 130, is being carefully lifted into position outside the hangar at Friedrichshafen on 11 February 1937. The Graf Zeppelin II, a magnificent airship of the German Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH, was the largest and most advanced zeppelin ever built at the time. With a length of 242 meters and a volume of 75,000 cubic meters, it was designed to carry up to 1,000 passengers on long-distance flights. The lifting of the bow framework marked a significant milestone in the construction process of the airship. The intricate engineering feat was accomplished using a massive crane, which hoisted the heavy structure into place with precision. The bow framework, which housed the forward part of the airship's hull, was a critical component of the overall structure. Once in position, it would be joined with the rest of the airship's hull, which was being built inside the hangar. The construction of the Graf Zeppelin II was a testament to the ingenuity and technical expertise of the German engineers and workers. Despite the challenges and complexities involved in building such a large and intricate aircraft, they managed to complete the airship in record time. The Graf Zeppelin II was eventually launched on May 21, 1938, and went on to make several long-distance flights, including a record-breaking journey to South America. This photograph captures a moment in history, showcasing the incredible engineering and logistical efforts required to build an airship of this scale. The bow framework, now in its final position, would soon become a part of the magnificent Graf Zeppelin II, which would go on to inspire awe and wonder in people around the world.
