EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the heart of the Cold War era, specifically 1965, showcasing a crucial component of the United States' defense system. The image captures an IBM 7090 computer in use as part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) at Clear Air Force Station near Anderson, Alaska. The BMEWS was designed to detect incoming sea-launched or intercontinental ballistic missiles, serving as a vital line of defense against potential nuclear threats. This particular site, known as BMEWS Site II, played a pivotal role in monitoring and alerting North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and United States Northern Command about any potential missile attacks. Constructed between 1959 and 1961, this technological marvel symbolizes both the advancements made during that period and the constant state of tension prevalent during the Cold War. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of historic significance to this photograph. As we gaze upon this image today, it serves as a reminder not only of our past but also highlights how far technology has come since then. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity in developing systems aimed at ensuring our safety amidst global uncertainties.
