EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the heart of the Cold War era, specifically 1965, showcasing a crucial component of the United States' defense system. The image captures an IBM 7090 computer in use as part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) at Clear Air Force Station near Anderson, Alaska. The BMEWS was designed to detect incoming sea-launched or intercontinental ballistic missiles, serving as a vital line of defense against potential nuclear threats. This particular site, known as BMEWS Site II, played a pivotal role in monitoring and alerting North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and United States Northern Command about any potential missile attacks.
