A massive Shonisaurus attempts to make a meal of a school of squid-like Belemnites

A massive, 30-ton Shonisaurus, the largest known ichthyosaur (marine reptile) attempts to make a meal of a school of squid-like Belemnites. On the far right is a prehistoric shark, and further below is an ancient Ammonite, another squid-like animal with a nautilus-like hard shell.
230 million years ago Panthalassa, the vast global ocean that surrounded the supercontinent Pangaea, was home to the ichthyosaurs, giant air-breathing reptiles that resembled fish and dolphins. Like modern day dolphins and whales, ichthyosaurs are believed to have evolved from land reptiles that moved back into the water. Ichthyosaurs are notable for having the largest eyes of any land or sea animal. The eye socket of one fossil Shonisaurus skull is over 3 feet in diameter

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back 230 million years ago to Panthalassa, the vast global ocean that surrounded the supercontinent Pangaea. Here, a magnificent Shonisaurus, weighing an astonishing 30 tons and recognized as the largest known ichthyosaur, attempts to satiate its hunger by preying on a school of squid-like Belemnites. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of a prehistoric shark on the far right and an ancient Ammonite below. Ichthyosaurs were remarkable creatures that resembled fish and dolphins and are believed to have evolved from land reptiles returning to water. Notably, they possessed eyes larger than any other creature in both land and sea realms; one fossilized Shonisaurus skull boasts an eye socket over three feet in diameter. This digitally generated image showcases not only nature's awe-inspiring diversity but also sheds light on paleobiology, evolution, marine biology, and paleontology. It serves as a reminder of how life has evolved through time in our oceans. The artwork beautifully captures the vibrant colors of underwater life while illustrating various animal themes such as hunting, conflict, action, attack, danger, escape, and survival. As we delve into this mesmerizing snapshot from Walter Myers' collection at Stocktrek Images, nature enthusiasts will undoubtedly be captivated by its depiction of ancient species engaged in their primal struggle for existence within the food chain.
