UIG5327064 Harpy Secunda : Harpyae secunda icon, Egyptian harpy. Renaissance Woodcut monsters. From the 1642 book Monstrorum Historia by Ulisse Aldrovandi (Bologna, 1522-1605). He is considered the founder of modern Natural History. In Greek mythology and Roman mythology, a harpy was a female monster in the form of a bird with a human face. They steal food from their victims while they are eating and carry evildoers (especially those who have killed their family) to the Erinyes. They seem originally to have been wind spirits. Their name means "snatchers". Ulisse Aldrovandi, 1642 ©Buyenlarge/UIG/Leemage; Buyenlarge Archive/UIG

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Renaissance woodcut print of Harpy Secunda from the 1642 book Monstrorum Historia by Ulisse Aldrovandi captures the essence of this mythical creature in all its terrifying glory. The Egyptian harpy, with its bird-like body and human face, is depicted in intricate detail, showcasing Aldrovandi's pioneering work in natural history. In Greek and Roman mythology, harpies were feared for their ability to steal food from their victims and carry evildoers to the Erinyes.
