Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire, 1924-1926. The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely is known locally as the ship of the Fens because of its prominent shape. The building was begun in 1083 by Abbot Simeon. In 1322 the cathedrals Norman crossing tower collapsed. It was replaced by the octagonal lantern tower for which Ely is most famous, which was designed by Alan of Walsingham, the cathedrals sacrist, and completed in 1351. Known as the ship of the Fens due to its distinctive shape, this magnificent structure has stood tall since its construction began in 1083 under Abbot Simeon. A towering tree stands gracefully beside the cathedral, adding a touch of serenity to the scene. The vibrant colors bring life to every intricate detail of this medieval masterpiece. This print is part of Hutchinson's Britain Beautiful collection from volume I (1924-1926), edited by Walter Hutchinson himself. It serves as a testament to British heritage and showcases FC Varley's talent for capturing architectural marvels through his lens.
