Government House, Calcutta, sketched by one of our special artists, 1876. Creator: Unknown

Government House, Calcutta, sketched by one of our special artists, 1876. Government House...occupies the principal site in Calcutta. It faces the Maidan...The plan of it might be described as a quadrangle, but a St. Andrew's cross will convey a nearer notion of its true form. This arrangement was adopted with a view to ventilation. A quadrangle would have required a central court, while the form adopted leaves the whole open to any breath of wind which may chance to blow...The private gardens of the house are in front; and to the south of them, and in a line with the centre of Government House, stands the equestrian statue of Lord Hardinge [Governor-General of India]'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
Government House, Calcutta, sketched by one of our special artists, 1876, is an enchanting image that transports us back in time to the heart of the British Raj in India. The focal point of the photograph is Government House, which occupies the most prominent site in Calcutta, facing the Maidan. The plan of this grand edifice might be described as a quadrangle, but a St. Andrew's cross would convey a nearer notion of its true form. This unique design was adopted with a view to ventilation, as a quadrangle would have required a central court, leaving the entire structure open to any breath of wind. The private gardens of the house are situated in front, and to the south of them, and in a line with the centre of Government House, stands the equestrian statue of Lord Hardinge, the 1st Viscount Hardinge of Lahore. The neo-classical building, with its grand facade and imposing columns, exudes an aura of imperial grandeur. The horses and horse-drawn vehicles in the foreground add to the sense of movement and activity. Lord Hardinge, who served as the Governor-General of India from 1858 to 1862, is depicted in the statue atop his horse, a fitting tribute to his military career and leadership. The statue, which was unveiled in 1862, is a symbol of British imperial power and dominance in India during the 19th century. This evocative image, which was published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when the British Raj held sway over India, and Calcutta was the centre of the British Empire in the East.
