Lord Raglan's Head-Quarters at Balaclava, 1854: A Snapshot of Military Life during the Crimean War This evocative image captures Lord Raglan's Head-Quarters at Balaclava during the Crimean War. The location, situated nearly half way between Sebastopol and Balaclava, served as the strategic base for Field Marshal FitzRoy Somerset of the British Army. The photograph offers a glimpse into the bustling activity that prevailed at the headquarters. The General's staff is seen in the foreground, accompanied by a horse kept constantly in readiness. A number of caleches and other vehicles in the yard indicate the constant flow of despatches and orders. Every available spot is alive with soldiers in active employment. The Duke of Cambridge, depicted in the image, is shown asking for the quarters of the French Marshal. Moments later, General Canrobert appears, looking haggard and careworn, adding to the sense of tension and urgency. The architecture of the house, with its arched windows and stone walls, stands in stark contrast to the barren landscape of the Crimean Peninsula. The presence of camels and horses further underscores the exotic and far-flung nature of the conflict. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, offers a unique window into the daily life of the military during the Crimean War. It captures the essence of a time and place where strategy, tension, and the relentless march of war intersected with the mundane realities of camp life.
