Migrant family from Oklahoma in Texas, alongside the road, 1936. Creator: Dorothea Lange
Migrant family from Oklahoma in Texas. A family of six alongside the road. An example of how they fall between the relief agencies. The father, aged thirty-five, is an intelligent fellow, a painter by trade. Advanced tuberculosis, victim of an occupational disease. Ineligible for WPA (Works Progress Administration), rated as totally disabled. As a state charge under Oklahoma relief standards, the family were told the maximum relief would be seven dollars every two weeks. They lost their home, their furniture, took to the road a year ago and when the photographs were made they were found to be without money, shelter, and without food for the four children

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph, captured by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1936, depicts a migrant family of six, huddled alongside a desolate Texas road. The father, a thirty-five-year-old painter, is a victim of advanced tuberculosis, an occupational disease that rendered him ineligible for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) due to his disability. The family, classified as state charges under Oklahoma relief standards, were informed that their maximum relief would amount to a meager seven dollars every two weeks. The family had lost their home, furniture, and had been homeless and penniless for over a year. The image was taken when they were discovered to be without food for their four children. The father, an intelligent and proud man, was a farm hand by trade, but his health condition made him unable to work in the agricultural sector, leaving him and his family in a state of destitution. The photograph is a stark reminder of the plight of displaced families during the Great Depression, who often fell between the cracks of relief agencies and struggled to make ends meet. The family's situation was a classic case of a Catch-22, where their disabilities made them ineligible for work, but their lack of employment made them ineligible for aid. The image captures the desperation and despair of the era, as well as the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
