EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Mr. R. H. Dana, an extraordinary American figure, taken from an 1876 issue of the Illustrated London News. The image captures Dana in mature years, with a thoughtful expression and a well-groomed appearance. However, the caption reveals a compelling backstory. Born in the United States, Dana's education was cut short at the age of nineteen due to a failure of his eyesight. In a remarkable turn of events, he went to sea as a common sailor on a merchant vessel. Upon his return, he penned a vivid account of his voyages, which was published as the renowned book "Two Years Before the Mast." Once his sight was restored, Dana resumed his studies, graduating with honors from Harvard in 1837 and being admitted to the Bar in 1840. In the following year, he published a treatise on seamanship, known as "The Seaman's Manual," which gained popularity in England and was reprinted there. Despite his impressive accomplishments, Dana's political beliefs led to his rejection by the Senate for an appointment as American Minister in London. A Free-soiler, he became an adherent of the Republican party in 1854. This print, engraved in the 19th century, serves as a testament to Dana's resilience, intellect, and unwavering commitment to his beliefs. The image, though of unknown origin, remains a valuable piece of historical documentation, showcasing the life and career of a remarkable American figure.
