EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the Ratification of the Peace of Münster between Spain and the Dutch Republic, which took place on May 15, 1648, in the Town Hall of Münster. The Peace of Münster marked the end of the Eighty Years' War, a long-standing conflict between Spain and the Dutch Republic, which began in 1568. The treaty brought an end to Spanish rule in the Netherlands and recognized the Dutch Republic as an independent state. The painting captures the moment of the ratification, with key figures from both sides coming together to sign the historic agreement. Among the Spanish representatives are Don Francisco de Bracamonte Guzmán, Count of Mendoza, and Gaspar de Bracamonte Guzmán, Marquis of Villalba. On the Dutch side, we see Johan van Mathenesse, the Grand Pensionary of Holland, and Adriaan Pauw, the States-General's Pensionary. Adriaen Clant, Antoine Brun, and Barthold van Gent are also present, likely serving as witnesses or advisors. The painting is a copy after Gerard Ter Borch II (1617-1681), also known as Gerard Ter Borch the Younger. Ter Borch was a renowned Dutch painter of the Baroque period, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the subtle nuances of human emotion. The original painting is not known to survive, making this copy an important historical record of this significant moment in European history. The painting's rich colors and intricate details bring the historic scene to life, transporting us back to the 17th century and the momentous occasion of the ratification of the Peace of Münster. This powerful group portrait stands as a testament to the diplomacy and perseverance that ultimately led to the recognition of the Dutch Republic as an independent state.
