Tinsley Viaduct on the M1 after completion, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1968. The twin cooling towers of Blackburn Meadows Power Station which many travellers heading north used as a landmark were still working at the time, but were demolished in 2008. The once great steelworks of Meadowhall can be seen on the right of the bridge. This monument to Sheffields steel industry also marked its decline, as the steelworks headed for recession and eventual closure in the early 1980s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Tinsley Viaduct on the M1 after completion, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1968. This print captures a significant moment in Sheffield's history. The Tinsley Viaduct stands tall as a symbol of progress and connectivity, marking the completion of an important transportation link in the heart of England. The twin cooling towers of Blackburn Meadows Power Station dominate the skyline, serving as a familiar landmark for travelers heading north. Sadly, these iconic structures were demolished in 2008, leaving behind only memories and photographs like this one to remind us of their presence. To the right of the bridge lies Meadowhall, once home to thriving steelworks that played a vital role in Sheffield's industrial prowess. However, this grand monument also serves as a somber reminder of its decline. As recession loomed over the iron and steel industry in the early 1980s, Meadowhall eventually succumbed to closure. This monochrome masterpiece by Michael Walters showcases not just architectural beauty but also tells a story about Sheffields' past – its rise fueled by industry and innovation followed by economic challenges that reshaped its landscape. As we gaze upon this image from half a century ago, we are transported back to an era when roads were expanding and dreams seemed limitless. It is through such photographs that we can appreciate our heritage while reflecting on how far we have come.
