EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the past with this image of the dining room at Rowton House in Hammersmith, West London, circa 1902. This large, purpose-built hostel or doss-house was established by the philanthropist Montagu William Lowry Corry, 1st Viscount Rowton, in 1899 to provide low-cost accommodation for working men. The interior of the dining room showcases the Edwardian era's simple yet functional design, with tiled walls, long refectory tables, and a servery where meals were prepared and served. Male inmates, dressed in their work clothes, are seen eating at the tables or queueing up to be served their meals. The atmosphere is one of communal living and shared experience, as the men take a break from their laborious day to enjoy a hot meal in the company of their fellow residents. The tiled walls and tiles on the floor add a sense of hygiene and orderliness to the space. Montagu William Lowry Corry, who was born in 1838, was a wealthy businessman and politician who dedicated much of his fortune to improving the living conditions of the working class. He erected six Rowton Houses around London, providing affordable accommodation for over 3,000 men. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of these institutions, which played a significant role in London's social history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
