EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Panama Tree, also known as the Camoruco or Sterculia apetala. The tree is native to Central and South America, specifically the Caribbean islands and the coastal regions of Central America. The illustration, drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), was published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The Panama Tree is a large, evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 meters tall. Its leaves are simple, ovate, and glossy, with a yellowish-green color. The tree is named for its distinctive warty bark, which is covered in small, raised bumps. The tree's flowers are yellow and appear in large clusters, while its fruit is a flat, round capsule that contains numerous small seeds. The illustration also features a crab, likely a marine crustacean, perched on a rock near the base of the tree. The tree's common name, Camoruco, is derived from the Taíno word for "crab," reflecting the tree's association with these crabs and the coastal environments in which it is found. Turpin was one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the natural beauty of his subjects. This illustration is a testament to his skill and the beauty of the natural world.
