EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Princess Nirgidma of the Torghuts, a nomadic people in Central Asia, pays a visit to the Citroen Central Asian Anthropological Expedition, led by Georges-Marie Haardt, at Ouroumtsi, Chinese Turkestan, now known as Urumqi, the capital city of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. Dressed in traditional Mongolian attire, with a hooded cloak and an eagle emblem adorning her headdress, Princess Nirgidma, also known as Princess Palta, adds a regal touch to the scene. The Citroen expedition, the "Yellow Cruise," was the third mission led by Haardt, a Belgian-born French industrialist and explorer, who served as the general manager and vice-president of the Citroen Automobile company. Haardt was an intrepid adventurer and a close friend of Andre Citroen. The expedition aimed to explore and document the diverse cultures and landscapes of Central Asia, and Princess Nirgidma's presence adds a fascinating insight into the rich tapestry of the region's nomadic peoples. The image captures the Princess in front of a Citroen vehicle, possibly her mode of transportation during the visit, with a yurt and encampment visible in the background. The expedition took place around 1931, and unfortunately, Haardt contracted a flu, complicated by double pneumonia, during the journey home and passed away in Hong Kong on March 16, 1932. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Haardt's groundbreaking exploration of Central Asia and the diverse peoples he encountered along the way.
