EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph from 1956, we catch a glimpse of the incomplete Avro 720 prototype, XD696, at Avro's factory in Manchester, England. The Avro 720 was a transport aircraft designed to meet the requirements of the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) for a long-range, twin-engine airliner. The Avro 720 was a groundbreaking design for its time, featuring a unique "double-decker" configuration with a lower deck for cargo and an upper deck for passengers. The aircraft was intended to have a capacity for up to 120 passengers and a range of over 4,000 miles. However, despite the promising design, the Avro 720 project faced numerous challenges. The prototype, XD696, was plagued by development issues, including engine problems and structural concerns. In this photograph, we see the aircraft in an incomplete state, with its wings still attached to the ground and its fuselage only partially assembled. The Avro 720 project was eventually canceled in 1958, before the prototype ever took to the skies. This photograph serves as a reminder of the sometimes-arduous journey from design to completion in the world of aviation. The Avro 720 may have been an incomplete prototype, but it represents the innovative spirit and determination of the Avro team to push the boundaries of what was possible in aircraft design. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into aviation history, capturing the Avro 720 prototype in a raw and unfinished state. The image offers a unique perspective on the complexities and challenges of bringing a new aircraft design to life.
