EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Vickers Varsity T.1 WF425 (msn 568), a historic aviation icon, as it stood proudly on display at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford during the mid-1980s. The Varsity, a versatile twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft, was manufactured by Vickers-Armstrongs between 1948 and 1958. This particular aircraft, WF425, had an illustrious career with the Meteorological Research Flight before it found its final resting place at the museum. The Varsity, with its distinctive hump-backed design, was a mainstay of the Royal Air Force's transport fleet for several decades. Its versatility made it an ideal platform for various roles, including maritime patrol, air-to-air refueling, and meteorological research. The Meteorological Research Flight, based at RAF Henlow, utilized WF425 for collecting atmospheric data, contributing significantly to the advancement of meteorological science. Sadly, by the late 1980s, WF425 began to show the signs of extensive corrosion, a common issue with aircraft of its era. Despite efforts to preserve it, the aircraft was eventually scrapped in 1995. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Varsity's storied past and the inexorable passage of time. The Vickers Varsity, with its rich history and versatile capabilities, remains an essential chapter in the annals of aviation history. This image, taken at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the Varsity in its final days as a testament to its enduring legacy.
