Photo Prints from Royal Cornwall Museum

Passmore Edwards Free Library, Truro, Cornwall. Around 1899

The Passmore Edwards Free Library and technical school on the corner of Pydar Street and Union Place. Funded by Passmore Edwards and designed by Silvanus Trevail, the school was built in 1899 as a Technical College for men and women. It became a secondary school for boys aged 11-15 in the 1930s. The school was built as an extension to the Passmore Edwards Free Library which had been built in 1896. Both buildings were later used as Truro Community Library. A group of mainly school children pose for the camera. Probably taken not long after the school opened. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Passmore Edwards Free Library in Truro, Cornwall, around 1899. Designed by the renowned architect Silvanus Trevail and generously funded by philanthropist Passmore Edwards, this architectural masterpiece served as both a library and technical school. The building stands proudly on the corner of Pydar Street and Union Place, symbolizing progress and education. The image showcases a group of mainly school children posing for the camera, likely taken shortly after the school's opening. Their youthful enthusiasm is palpable against the backdrop of this impressive institution. This photograph offers us a glimpse into an era when education was expanding its horizons to include both men and women. In later years, during the 1930s, this establishment transformed into a secondary school exclusively for boys aged 11-15. However, it continued to share space with its predecessor -the Passmore Edwards Free Library- which had been erected in 1896. Eventually, these buildings would evolve into what is now known as Truro Community Library. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan with his keen eye for detail and composition, this snapshot encapsulates not only Victorian charm but also Edwardian elegance intertwined with Cornish heritage. It serves as a testament to how architecture can shape communities while providing opportunities for learning that transcend generations.
