Northern Corries at dawn
Northern Corries at dawn. View looking west just before sunrise across Coire an t-Sneachda (hollow area) to Coire Lochain. The ridge separating the two hollows is is the Fiacaill Ridge. The flat area at left is the Cairngorm plateau. A corrie or cirque is a semi-circular hollow with a steep headwall. They are a feature of local mountain glaciation. In the Quaternary, the hollows may have been wholly or partly filled by small glaciers or may have acted as the source area for larger valley glaciers. Photographed in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland, in November

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking beauty of the Northern Corries at dawn in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. The viewer is treated to a stunning view looking west just before sunrise across Coire an t-Sneachda to Coire Lochain, with the majestic Fiacaill Ridge separating these two hollow areas. The photograph showcases the remarkable geological features of this region, with corries or semi-circular hollows and their steep headwalls dominating the landscape. The image portrays a winter scene, as frost covers the rocky terrain and snow blankets both mountains and valleys. The soft sunlight of early morning bathes the countryside in a warm glow, creating an ethereal atmosphere that is truly mesmerizing. It's evident that these corries were shaped by glacial activity during past ice ages, as they may have been filled by small glaciers or acted as sources for larger valley glaciers. With its rugged rocks and towering ridges, this photograph encapsulates both the wildness and serenity found in Scotland's highlands. As day breaks over this picturesque scenery, one can't help but be captivated by nature's grandeur on display here.
