Inauguration of the new tower of St. Mary Magdelene's Church, Taunton, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Inauguration of the new tower of St. Mary Magdelene's Church, Taunton, 1862. For many years past the old tower had been " condemned...Such, indeed, was the generally insecure and dangerous condition of the whole pile that, at last, even the ringing of the noble peal of bells...was found to be attended with absolute risk to its stability...Mr. G. G. Scott, the well-known ecclesiastical architect, was consulted, and...it was finally "unanimously resolved" that the decided advice...should be acted upon, the whole tower taken down and reproduced facsimile in every detail of the original design...The original tower dated from the late fifteenth century, and it was justly regarded by architects and antiquarians as one of the most notable and elaborate of those towers of the west...[The new] sculptures were, with the approval of the architects, intrusted to the skilful hands of Mr. Boulton, of Worcester. We should not omit to mention the name of the builder, Mr. Davis, of Taunton, who seems to have most satisfactorily performed his part of the work. The total cost (exclusive of such additions as the figures, the rebuilding of the organ, &c.) has, we are informed, amounted to £6217'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the momentous occasion of the inauguration of the new tower at St. Mary Magdelene's Church in Taunton, England, in 1862. For decades, the old tower had been a source of concern due to its deteriorating condition and the inherent danger it posed. Architects and antiquarians regarded the original tower, which dated back to the late fifteenth century, as one of the most notable and elaborate of its kind in the west. However, the ringing of its bells had become a risky endeavor, and it was ultimately decided that the entire tower needed to be taken down and rebuilt. The renowned ecclesiastical architect, Mr. G. G. Scott, was consulted, and he advised the complete reconstruction of the tower, ensuring that it was an exact facsimile of the original design. The sculptures for the new tower were entrusted to the skilled hands of Mr. Boulton, of Worcester. The builder, Mr. Davis, of Taunton, was responsible for the successful execution of the project. The total cost of the reconstruction, excluding additional expenses such as the figures and the rebuilding of the organ, was reported to be £6217. This photograph serves as a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship that went into preserving the historical significance and architectural beauty of St. Mary Magdelene's Church. The intricate details of the new tower, as seen in this image, perfectly mirror the original design, ensuring that the legacy of this remarkable structure endures for generations to come.
