The International Exhibition: angels from the Hereford Screen, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The International Exhibition: angels from the Hereford Screen, designed by G. G. Scott, R.A. manufactured by Skidmore's Art-Manufacturers Company, Coventry, 1862. This work...the grandest and most triumphant achievement of modern architectural art...the largest art-work in metal of which we have knowledge...fitly illustrates the most glorious scene ever enacted on this earth - the Ascension of our Lord...At each side are angels hymning his glad welcome to the slues; and how full of wondering adoration is their gaze!...One feature of the screen which should not be overlooked or passed slightingly is the open manifestation which we have, upon viewing it, of the mode of its formation: it has resulted from the work of the hammer and the chisel - it is wrought...Every chemist is acquainted with the beautiful colours of some of the oxydes of the metals; but Mr. Skidmore has attempted the utilising such by applying them to the colouring of the iron; thus, as his work is formed of iron, copper, and brass, he has applied to it the colours of the oxydes of these metals'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a section of The International Exhibition's Angels from the Hereford Screen, created in 1862. The designer of this grand masterpiece was G.G. Scott, R.A., while it was manufactured by Skidmore's Art-Manufacturers' Company in Coventry. The angels depicted here mark the most magnificent and triumphant achievement in modern architectural art, representing the glorious scene of the Ascension of our Lord. At the sides of the screen, angels are shown hymning a joyful welcome to the Lord, their gazes filled with awe and adoration. One remarkable aspect of the screen that deserves attention is the open demonstration of its creation. Unlike many artworks of the time, this screen did not originate from a mold or a printing press. Instead, it was meticulously crafted through the skilled use of hammers and chisels. Another unique feature of the screen is the application of metal oxides to the coloring of the iron, copper, and brass components. This innovative approach allowed Skidmore to utilize the beautiful colors naturally present in these metals, resulting in a visually stunning and harmonious composition. The Illustrated London News described this work as 'the largest art-work in metal of which we have knowledge,' and it is easy to see why. The Angels from the Hereford Screen continue to captivate audiences with their intricate design, masterful craftsmanship, and the beauty of their materials.
