Metal ornaments, Germany, 19th century, (1898). Creator: Unknown

Metal ornaments, France and Germany, 19th century, (1898). Empire style fittings: Figs 1-23: Metal-Ornaments of furniture in the Kings Palace [New Palace?] at Stuttgart and from the public collection of Wurttemburg antiquities in that place....The Napoleonic wars had considerable influence on the Empire-Style, in which afterwards were to be found emblems of Victory, eagles, laurel-wreaths and such like. In consequence of the Egyptian campaign new decorative elements were adopted, as for instance the capitals of Lotus-flowers, Sphinxes, winged lions and other Egyptian figures, joined sometimes to Chinese designs. Plate 89 from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of metal ornaments from 19th century Germany. The intricate designs, created by an unknown artist, reflect the Empire style that emerged after the Napoleonic wars. Influenced by the Egyptian campaign, these decorative elements feature symbols of victory such as eagles and laurel wreaths, as well as motifs inspired by Chinese and Egyptian cultures. The photograph captures the symmetrical beauty of these metal ornaments, which were once found in the King's Palace at Stuttgart and Wurttemburg antiquities collection. Each piece is meticulously crafted with attention to detail, showcasing a fusion of neoclassical and mythological themes. The image transports us back in time to an era when interior design was richly adorned with garlands, floral patterns, and stylized figures like sphinxes and winged lions. It offers a glimpse into the artistic sensibilities of 19th century Germany while highlighting how historical events shaped artistic styles. This print is part of "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from German author H. Dolmetsch's work. Published in London in 1898 by B. T. Batford, it serves as a valuable resource for art enthusiasts seeking inspiration from past eras. With its monochrome aesthetic and exquisite craftsmanship on display, this print invites viewers to appreciate the beauty of metalwork as both functional decoration and symbolic expression within historical contexts.
