Sebastopol, sketched from Fort Constantine, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Sebastopol, sketched from Fort Constantine, 1854. Crimean War: strategic port on the Black Sea under siege. [British commander] Lord Raglan, it is said, received a few days ago, a letter from [Russian general] Prince Menschikoff, requesting him to spare the town, which was full of ladies. He replied that he was in no hurry to attack the town; and he advised the ladies to leave it...The steamer moored at the bottom of Sebastopol harbour, proved extremely troublesome during the night. It commenced firing shell and shot at midnight, with such vigour, that the troops of Sir de Lacy Evans division were turned out, as it was feared that a surprise was intended. The fire soon ceased, however, and the troops were not further disturbed'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sebastopol, sketched from Fort Constantine, 1854: A Pivotal Moment in the Crimean War This evocative sketch, captured from Fort Constantine in 1854, offers a glimpse into the tumultuous events unfolding during the Crimean War. The strategic port city of Sebastopol, nestled on the Black Sea, was under siege, with the British and Russian forces engaged in a bitter conflict over disputed territories. At the time, Lord Raglan, the British commander, received a letter from Russian General Alexander Sergeyevich Menshikov, requesting him to spare the town. The city was reportedly filled with women, and Lord Raglan replied that he was in no rush to attack. He advised the ladies to leave the town, as he had no intention of launching an immediate assault. The tranquil scene depicted in this sketch, however, was not to last. A steamer moored at the bottom of Sebastopol harbour caused quite a stir during the night. It began firing shells and shot at midnight, prompting the British troops to be roused from their sleep. Fearing a surprise attack, the soldiers were put on alert. However, the firing soon ceased, and the troops were not further disturbed. This image, published in the Illustrated London News, provides a unique perspective of the Crimean War, offering a glimpse into the strategic importance of Sebastopol and the tense standoff between the British and Russian forces. The sketch serves as a poignant reminder of the historical significance of this pivotal moment in European history.
