EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia (1892-1980) during her early life, around the year 1913. Born on October 13, 1892, in New Palace, Potsdam, Victoria Louise was the eldest daughter of the German Emperor Wilhelm II and his second wife, Empress Frederick. Raised in the opulent surroundings of the German imperial court, Victoria Louise's childhood was marked by grandeur and tradition. She received an education befitting her royal status, learning various skills and subjects that would prepare her for her future role as a princess consort. As a young woman, Victoria Louise captured the attention of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick (1887-1953), who was known for his strong military background and charismatic personality. The Duke, who was 13 years her senior, was immediately smitten with the beautiful and intelligent Princess. Their courtship began in 1913, and the couple's engagement was announced in October of that year. The engagement was met with great enthusiasm from both the German and Brunswick courts, as well as the public. In the photograph, Victoria Louise is depicted in a formal gown, with her chestnut-brown hair styled in an elegant updo. Her bright, expressive eyes and radiant smile convey a sense of youthful energy and excitement. The Duke, standing behind her, places a protective hand on her shoulder, reflecting his deep affection for the future Princess of Brunswick. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a young royal princess on the cusp of a significant moment in her life, as she prepares to embark on a new chapter as a duchess and future mother. The image captures the essence of a romantic and transformative time in Victoria Louise's life, as she transitions from a cherished princess to a beloved duchess.
