The Imperial Saloon, SY Livadia, 1880

Engraving of the Imperial Saloon on Czar Alexander IIs steam yacht Livadia, built at John Elders shipyard, Govan, in 1880. Extremely lavishly fitted out, this yacht was given a radical design, supposedly based on the shape of a turbot. This flat fish design, 235 foot long, 153 foot wide at its beamiest and with only 6 foot draught, was very unsuccessful, with passengers complaining of extreme seasickness. The Livadia was broken up in 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the opulent world of Czar Alexander II's steam yacht Livadia with this striking engraving of the Imperial Saloon. Built in 1880 at John Elder's shipyard in Govan, this extravagant vessel was designed with a radical shape supposedly inspired by a turbot fish. Measuring an impressive 235 feet long and 153 feet wide at its beamiest, the Livadia boasted lavish fittings and luxurious decor throughout. However, despite its grandeur, the yacht was plagued by design flaws that led to extreme seasickness among passengers. In 1927, after years of complaints and import from those on board, the ill-fated Livadia met its end when it was broken up. This engraving captures a moment in history when luxury and innovation collided with practicality and comfort. As you gaze upon this image, imagine yourself stepping into the Imperial Saloon, surrounded by ornate furnishings and intricate details that speak to a bygone era of elegance and excess. Let your imagination run wild as you explore the fascinating story behind this unique piece of maritime history captured for eternity in print form.
